    Summary

Ratio stares back at him. The typical acuity of his eyes has dulled into something more welcoming. He raises a hand, the pads of his gloved fingers brushing against the gems of Aventurine’s earring. “Peacock feathers do not fade or lose their shiny luster, even after the animal has died.”

“I didn’t think you’d be a maundering drunk,” Aventurine scowls, but doesn’t tilt his head away from Ratio’s hand. The doctor’s words are something that Aventurine is neither drunk nor sober enough to ruminate on.

or, five conversations aventurine and ratio don't have and one they finally do.

“She'll need stability,” he says after a moment. He finds Aventurine's gaze over the girl’s head. “You'll need to figure out what you plan to do in this…venture of yours. We will deduce a plan of action once you’ve decided.”

There it is again, that casually spoken ‘we’.

Aventurine laughs weakly, plucking at a blue crayon. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, we will.”

Without a contingency to fall back on, Aventurine rescues an orphan from the wreckage of her home-world. Ratio, perceptive as ever, finds out.
    And then helps.

"I don't know what you mean, doctor. Surely, you've had more liquor than-,"

"Everything about you is fake. You have no idea who you actually are, do you?" Ratio leaned forward with a scathing expression as he spat, “You don’t care that you’re hurting yourself, because there isn't even anybody there to hurt. You’re so far into this farce, this character that you play, nothing matters to you anymore. So fine, Aventurine, keep it up. Don’t worry about getting better for me, or you, or anybody. Just remember the next time you're running around these galas and dinners and parties, and you’re all done up on the outside like the clamorous little peacock you are, with your chains and your rings and all this frivolous fabric,” he said, flicking the fur that was draped around Aventurine's neck, “Inside, you’re the same empty, pathetic man you always have been. You cannot purchase what your soul lacks.”

Aventurine would rather hide what’s hurting him under poker, parties, and piles of money. Ratio doesn't like it one bit.

    Summary

The first time Aventurine offers to sleep with one Doctor Veritas Ratio, it's supposed to be business as usual.
In Aventurine’s experience, everyone in the Guild is hungry for praise, happy to have their egos stroked, and if they happen to get their dick wet at the same time, even better.

    Everyone is happy.

Except, apparently, Ratio, who seems to have missed the memo.
    —-
Or a handful of times Aventurine and Ratio find themselves sleeping together – literally or figuratively– and a few times they don’t.

    More serious than it sounds.
