    “You are hurt,” Rosanov keeps his eyes on the house.
    He looks so still and like he is also afraid of breaking the tension.
    “No,” Shane mutters.
    Forget about it, don’t talk about it, if I tell you you might realize how fucking weak I am and you won’t want me anymore, or worse, if I tell you and you defend me, everyone will know.
    “Its not a big deal,”
    “Ah, it is no big deal, you show up in Boston, the natural enemy all bruised, and will not talk about it, ok,” Ilya shrugs.
    It does sound absurd. Well, it is absurd.
    “We don’t talk,” Shane spits back out, quicker than he intended.
    Something flashes across Ilya’s face, hurt? Pain? Fear? Anger? Shane can’t place it and to be honest he is too tired to try.
    Ilya takes a beat. He puts his hands in his pockets.
    “This is bigger than we,” Ilya says and turns back to his house and starts to walk.
    Is it? Is anything bigger than us?

    Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed.

    He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being.

    Niko turning twelve closed that distance.

    Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.
