Summary
“I don’t know if you’ve used my mirror, but you haven’t gotten any prettier in the past hour, Burakh,” Dankovsky says, sounding strained. “Stay and get your rest, or I’ll have to contend with having you on my conscience when they inevitably mug you on the street—”
“Your might need to lower your expectations,” Artemy interrupts. “This is how I look. And your mirror is in pieces, by the way, have you not noticed smashing it?”
Daniil smiles—it’s not a pleasant smile by far. “Stay,” he instructs, almost condescendingly. “And take your rest.”
Well, two can play this game.
Artemy parries back, “And what about you?”
[Or: one night at Stillwater; glimpsed from two different mirror-sides.]

Summary
In Daniil Dankovsky's life, there were sometimes distinct, shining moments that very nearly persuaded him to believe in supernatural forces that pulled at the strings of the world. Moments that were practically theater.
Moments such as this one; where he found himself unbelievably staring at Artemy for the first time in five years.

Summary
As the ground beneath his boot soles shivered, the Haruspex at last knew what the odonghs meant when they said they could sense the weight of every pair of feet on the streets of the town.
Because he felt footsteps that should not be there, crossing the Bridge Square.
Walking west, to where the sun set, the steps spoke their own rhythmic language, tolling like a warning bell: I am going to see this to the end.

Artemy Burakh was to be executed, it was no wonder some of his Termites would bear witness to the end of their covenant by the strictest manner of the act. What is a death sentence, and who is fit to give it?
