Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

“Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.
He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.
A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Shane recovered at his parents’ house. For once, he didn’t watch any hockey games after the Metros were knocked out of the playoffs. He knew it baffled his mom, but how was he supposed to tell her that the only thing he wanted to do while watching was analyze and pick apart the plays with Ilya fucking Rozanov — the man who had eviscerated his heart?
Some days Shane felt so empty he didn’t know if he even cared about hockey anymore. That always sent him spiraling into a panic, because how could he not care about hockey?
All Shane Hollander was supposed to care about was hockey.
