The boy remains still, doesn’t even offer a flicker of acknowledgement. Not the first pampered, overconfident, old-money student to sit in that chair. Francis may not have been born into wealth, but authority is authority, and he has decades of experience in wielding his. “Are you listening to me, child?”
Finally Brandt moves, lifting his gaze and adjusting his glasses with a deliberate slowness. He then exhales, slowly, but with an edge sharp enough to hint at irritation, staring at Francis like his concern is completely unnecessary. “I’m fine,” he says, his voice soft but certain. “There’s no need to make a fuss.”
Francis studies him—the creases in his uniform, the mark on his cheek deepening the longer they linger, the faint bruise just beneath his collar.
“You look more concerned than I am, Father,” Brandt observes.
“You are my responsibility,” Francis scolds, measured and low. “Your well-being is my concern whether you accept it or not.”

“Viktor,” he hisses, and Viktor can hear the footsteps down the hall now, makes a split decision and turns, pressing Jayce against the wall and kissing him. Jayce stiffens for a moment against him, and Viktor slides his hand up, pressing his thumb to the hinge of his jaw, and marvels when Jayce goes pliant, mouth opening under him with a soft moan.
Where everything is the same except Viktor is 34 to Jayce’s 24 and he wants to ruin that pretty boy for anyone else.

The energy between them snaps taught as piano wire. Jayce looks at Viktor with open wonder, his mouth falling open. It’s as if he’s been seen for the first time, though now that he’s said it Viktor finds the idea laughably obvious. A man who sought out someone whose life he could improve doesn’t do that for nothing. Viktor is so relieved to find something self-serving under Jayce’s idealism.
“I would,” Jayce says, his voice a strained whisper.
