    Summary

Sam finds Jack sitting on the floor behind one of the shelves in the library, head in his hands. “Hey,” he says, quiet.

Jack jumps anyway, barely turns to face Sam before drawing his knees up tighter against himself and wrapping both arms around them, hiding his face. “I’m fine,” he says. “Just...”

“I’m not,” Sam whispers. "It's okay if you're not, either."

Jack’s hands loosen. His head rises. The look in his eyes (raw terror and confusion and self-loathing) is one Sam knows all too well.

In other words... After the events of 14.01, Sam, exhausted and unable to sleep, has an honest talk with Jack about being human. Maybe it helps them both. Maybe there's something to this family thing, after all. Needless to say, spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

    Summary

Dean's heavy footfalls on the porch are a death knell. All Sam feels is relief.

He crashes into the house before Bobby can open the door. Eyes closed, Sam hears a ragged, choked, "Where is he, Bobby? Where's Sammy?"

It shouldn't hurt this much, the way that old name slides off Dean's tongue like it still belongs there. Dean probably thinks Sam's dead. He wouldn't pick up any calls from Bobby after the first. He doesn't know the truth is infinitely worse.

Sam imagines this will be the last time he'll hear that name from his brother's lips. He wants to cherish it, right up until he feels the cold steel of a machete against his neck.

In other words: Sequel to 'Til Human Voices Wake Us. Sam wakes from the agonizing effects of the cure to a darker world. Dean finds out what happened, and the cruel voicemail he didn't actually leave on Sam's phone comes into play.

    Summary

Sam doesn't bother explaining, just tips his chin to let Dean see the livid bruising where the witch's doll strangled him.

Dean hisses. "Jesus, Sam." Callused fingertips run down his neck, lingering over the mottled marks and exerting just the tiniest, fluttering bit of pressure before returning to the wheel. When Sam glances over, his brother is staring at the road again, too intent to be casual. "I guess I know why you didn't mention it, but... man, you gotta let me know if you're really hurting. There's a line when it comes to this kind of thing. A little sore throat is on the sure, okay side of the line, and my-throat-is-swelling-closed-'cause-I-got-freakin'-strangled-nearly-to-death is on the tell me right the hell away side."

In other words... Placed after the end of 12.20, when Sam doesn't wake up to Dean frantically calling his name. Sam isn't okay, Dean isn't okay, and there's a laundry list a mile long of reasons why. Sam talks. Dean listens. Actual meaningful conversation happens. Sam might sleep in Dean's bed. There was too much pain and too little casual affection and care this episode, honestly. Needless to say, spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

    Summary

[Endverse!AU] After his phone call with Dean in “The End,” Sam is exhausted. Still recovering from his near-relapse when hunters Reggie Hull and Tim Janklow tried to force him to drink demon blood and unwilling to fall into bed because Lucifer is waiting in his head, Sam sets off running.

He runs straight into the end of the world, where Zachariah tells him that this is where his choices will inevitably lead him unless he plays his part. Sam finds unexpected allies in the survivors at Camp Chitaqua, and maybe―just maybe―there's still reason for hope. Maybe they won't always wind up here. Not if Sam has his say.

In other words: BAMF!Sam does not know when to give up. I've always thought the end!verse needed more Sam. Plus some much-needed sorta-reconciliation between 2009!Sam and Endverse!Dean, because reasons.

    Summary

Bars make Sam think of November 2nd, how John always spent the anniversary of Mary's death as far away from Sam as he could get. Sometimes, when he came home, red-eyed and saturated with the odor of cheap beer, he'd look at Sam like he didn't even know him, and he'd start to say something, spit out "You—" before he bit his tongue and buried his face in a pillow.

Sam doesn't have many good memories of bars, but maybe he can make some. Brady orders beer and Sam orders ginger ale, much to Brady's amusement.

"It's too early for me. Later," Sam says, and leaves it at that.

Brady just shrugs and throws back a third of his drink like he was born to do it.

In other words... Right before Thanksgiving break of his sophomore year, Sam follows Brady to a bar. A part of him knows he shouldn't involve himself in other people's business, but he can't help it—he can't ignore the unfairness of it. He never could have expected what would come afterward, though.

    Summary

“Sam?” Dean reaches out toward him without thinking.

Sam reacts to his touch like it burns, eyes wide and unfocused as his hands lash out; under his breath, barely audible, Dean hears Sam whispering no; no, please. Something cold twists in his gut as he retreats, pressing himself against the other side of the stairwell and raising his hands in surrender. “Sam, it's me,” he says. “It's Dean.”

But Sam doesn't hear him. He's muttering and still holding his hands up, and Dean sees a trickle of blood slide down from his hairline before following the contours of his face into the dip under his eye and then down his nose. Sam knocks himself off the step and fumbles down two more before Dean finally hears him breathe.

    “Dean?” he whispers.

In other words... After the events of 11x14, Sam's feeling the effects of what Lucifer did to him but figures Dean has enough on his plate. Things don't work out as he planned, and Dean figures out anyway. Needless to say, spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

    Summary

Dean does it—as he does everything—with a bang. Later, Sam won't be able to remember quite how it went down (he thinks Rowena in chains was involved, remembers sigils and spellwork and maybe even the actual door of the temporary cage being blown off), but he does remember, with perfect clarity, the very first moment he heard Dean's voice, raw and desperate.

“Damn it, Sam, answer me if you can hear me!”

He remembers staring, semi-conscious and trembling, through the bars of the temporary cage, remembers leaning toward the voice.

In other words After what happened to his brother in 11x09, O Brother Where Art Thou, Dean will do anything to get Sam out and get him home. The rest they can figure out as they go. Needless to say, please don't read this if you don't want spoilers for the events of the episode.

    Summary

It takes until Sam is unconscious in a pool of his own blood for Dean to realize that maybe something's gotta give. So maybe Dean's angry. Maybe he gets a little reckless, slow to respond when he hears the sounds of a scuffle. He has a good excuse, though, airtight: he'll protect his brother to the end, no questions, but this? This isn't his brother.

In other words... It takes near death for Dean to warm up to his soulless brother, but some things are just muscle memory. Sam refuses pain meds, Dean thinks the soulless guy is kinky, and in the end, maybe he understands the fathomless robo-Sam a little better than he did before.

    Summary

Sam opens one eye and clenches it shut again at the light, but it's enough to see dark brown hair and ice blue eyes. Sam swallows. "Loud," he rasps. "Bright."

"I don't..." Cas pauses for a moment. "I'm loud?" he asks.

    Sam nods.

"I am speaking at a very reasonable volume." Cas sighs, but then lowers his voice to a whisper. "I can heal you, if you'll allow me to come closer."

In other words... After that last scene with Sam in 11x06, Castiel discovers the younger Winchester, panicked and confused from his visions. Sam shares what's been happening to him lately and what he went through while Cas was away. Needless to say, please don't read this if you don't want spoilers for the events of the episode.

    Summary

Every part of Sam burns. There's blood on his lips that's not his own (not that kind; it doesn't taste right), and even the smallest rustle or crunch of leaves crashes against his eardrums and sends pain splintering through his skull. He's so thirsty.

Frantic attempts to remember how he got here leave him with a soup of images and impressions—color, tension, blood, pain, desperation. He starts from what he knows. He was on a hunt...

In other words... Still reeling from what happened when Sam was soulless, Bobby gets careless and a vampire turns Sam before they can put it down. Badly wounded, Sam's body uses all its remaining resources in an attempt to slowly heal him, and it's a long way back home. The cravings and even the agony of the cure aren't the worst things Sam has to face.

    Summary

Death is older than creation, fated to reap the harvest of souls when the world ends. He is older than tiny human minds can comprehend. He is not a fanboy of Sam Winchester.

    He isn't.

In other words... A short and slightly-snarky character study of Death and Sam Winchester inspired by Death's uncharacteristic and fascinating appreciation for Sam. This also seems to be the first and only work on AO3 tagged "Death & Sam Winchester," which is a tragedy, really.

    Summary

Dean shoves the gun into his waistband and runs out when he hears the scream.

He's expecting looming Darkness and wild-eyed zombies. He's expecting mass-death and cars crashed and a cityscape on fire.

Somehow, what he sees is a lot worse: the sky is clear, everyone is perfectly human, and... Sam is on the pavement, on his side, limbs jerking and spine arching.

In other words... Dean avoids Sam's every attempt to talk about things after the Darkness is released, finally boiling over and lashing out at Sam. Sam, though, has more to worry about than the darkness.

    Summary

Sam's always thought it's this fiction-thing, biting your lip until it bleeds. It seems dramatic and all, but short of tearing off too much dry skin or having really dry lips to start with, it takes more pressure than most people are willing to exert, really, to break the skin of the lip and make it actually bleed.

The pain of broken skin is absolutely nothing, though, to the feeling of Lucifer's hands rooting around in his innards (with that sort of gleeful detachment that the fallen archangel must have spent millennia cultivating) and tearing out whatever displeases him.

In other words... Sam wakes up from a Cage trauma-fueled nightmare and can't shake the dream. Dean helps by turning on the heater in high summer and sweating through it. In the end, there's nothing like a bit of blasphemy to shake the cold in his bones.

    Summary

“Shh,” Dean's voice, when he speaks, is scraped raw and bitten-back, his breaths broken, but Sam knows his eyes will be dry. This is a happy moment, and neither of them is allowed to cry right now.

“Sammy,” Dean whispers, hands busy stroking through Sam's hair and down his back (gentle, feather-light so as not to disturb the broken ribs). “You hear that? The ambulance is coming. You're gonna be all right, huh? You're gonna be all right.”

In other words: John responds a little too enthusiastically to Sam's snark when he uncovers his son's acceptance letter, and Sam leaves, injured and betrayed. Thankfully, it doesn't end there. For the prompt: What happened during the Stanford fight and how Dean felt about his brother leaving (and not wanting him to go). Anything about this would be great.

    Summary

The prayer starts out general (confessions, pleas for forgiveness) and then turns specific. Before he knows it, he's praying to Cas.

    His phone rings.

A raw laugh breaks from his throat when he sees who's calling.

He answers without words, just lifting the phone to his ear.

“Sam?” Cas says. “I heard you.”

In other words: After the events of 10x21 Dark Dynasty, Sam prays. Somehow, he finds himself praying to Cas, who comes, and makes a valiant attempt at disabusing Sam of the notion that the events of the evening are his fault. Cuddling and awkward attempts at comfort ensue. Needless to say, please don't read this if you don't want spoilers for the events of the episode.

    Summary

Sam thinks something's wrong when Dean won't meet his eyes and leaves to buy pie by himself. He knows something's wrong when Dean returns with pies and a salad, for God's sake. He's absolutely beside himself when Dean offers to share the pie. Dean never shares pie. It's somewhere in the Book of Things that Are, right beside gravity and sunrises.

In other words: Dean has a secret. Sam may or may not figure it out. Angsty, awkward brotherliness placed in the fourth season, somewhere between Jump The Shark and The Rapture.

    Summary

On the way up the stairs, leaning almost all his weight on Dean while trying to force his legs to manage the next step (and the next, and the next) without falling, Sam asks Dean where he gets all the handkerchiefs.

“You use it?” he mutters when Dean doesn't answer.

“Hmm?” Dean grunts as Sam fumbles the second-to-last step, dipping to catch his not-so-little brother before he face-plants.

“You, uh...” Words. Sam forces them out through the fog in his brain and the laziness of his tongue. “You like, blow your nose on it?”

Dean doesn't respond, and just barely manages to put off the conversation they should be having until they get home.

Episode tag for 10x19 The Werther Project.

I was kind of shocked by Sam's readiness to die in this episode, and even more shocked by the fact that neither Dean nor the show itself chose to really address it. As you can see, I took things into my own hands.

    Summary

After the fever breaks, Sam lies pliant and trusting as Dean presses a kiss to one cheek and then helps his brother out of sweat-damp superhero pajamas and into clean clothes with all the focus and patience of a saint.

John watches, and wonders, from the outside, if either of the boys realizes how deep that bond goes. He wonders if anyone else will see it, will try to break it.

In other words: John watches young Dean care for a sick, fevered Sam, and regrets the choices that have led them here.

    Summary

In a second, Dean is at his brother's side.

When they were little, they sparred. They both took some punches. This isn't just-got-punched-in-the-face Sam. This is something else.

He looks exhausted, eyes sunken and bruised, and there's blood on his lips and in the corners of the mouth, flecks of it still lingering in places down his chin (Cas later tells him that he tried to wash most of it away). He looks pale as death, near-transparent and dwarfed by a big, rough blanket.

    Sequel to The Long Dark.

In other words: After Sam's seizure, Cas shows up at the bar where Dean's drinking himself stupid and demands his attention and immediate return. Dean, of course, panics.

    Summary

They say hell hath no fury, but they've never seen Dean when he's pissed. And Dean calls Sam a girl. Not that Dean was scorned. By anyone, really. Certainly not by Sam. There was no scorning. Just an ill-advised trip to a bar, and Sam only had a few drinks.

Dean is not his brother's keeper, as much as he'd like to think so.

But hell hath no fury quite like Dean when he's angry. Or maybe it does. Maybe he learned it there.

    SEQUEL: The Cruelest Lies

For the prompt: Gen, Season 6. After a huge fight, an angry Dean takes off. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but Sam suffers a huge seizure right after and Castiel has to take care of him. Sam is convinced he's too broken and that Dean would be better off without him. Castiel shows him otherwise.
