Summary
For a second, he thought he was dreaming. Just another nightmare. It was the only explanation. But the pain in his side told him otherwise. He could count on one hand the times he ever felt this level of fear, and the man he was facing was responsible for most of them.
He forced himself to breathe, feeling his heart thumping hard against his chest, and tightened his grip on the small blade to keep his hand from shaking.
Run. He could hear his sister’s voice yelling at him from the back of his mind. Run Gwaine!

What dark secrets are lurking in Gwaine's past? It's obvious there was more to it than what he told Merlin, and when someone from his nightmares comes knocking on his door, he has no choice but to face his past.My main focus for this story is Gwaine's past and the friendship between Gwaine, Arthur and Merlin. No slash, just friends. I just love their dynamic in the series and I hope I was able to capture it. Takes place in the 3 years between season 4 and 5.

“If the king is so concerned about Merlin,” he asks, looking at Leon, “Why does he always take him along on quests and patrols? It’s not necessary to bring a servant, and he’s clearly worried—”
Leon smiles. “We’ve often asked the same thing,” he says, and shrugs. “But I don’t think Merlin would allow himself to be left behind, so any argument is moot.”
“He could order him,” Mordred says.
“Merlin would just follow,” Leon says. “It’s easier to include him from the start. Sometimes, I think those two just need to be close to each other. Hard enough to keep them apart anyway, even at the beginning, when they were just constantly sniping at each other.”
When Mordred looks back, Arthur’s arm is around Merlin’s shoulder, and he is smiling broadly. Merlin’s eyes are bright and focused on Arthur, and his lips are tugged upwards, as if he can’t quite stop himself.
Merlin loves Arthur to the point of fear, Mordred realises.
