Summary
The cultivator found himself confused at the sudden change of scenery. He vividly remember dying what assumed had been only a few days prior at the hands of some thiefs. Perhaps they had been disappointed with how little he owned and tried to exchange his body for coin. He obviously wasn't deemed worth much if he ended up in this alley among the other trash.
Or Xié Lian ends up in ghost city before his third asecention, shortly after the events at Banyue pass. He ends up taking on someone else's dept and now works at the gambler's den. He technically belongs to Hua Cheng for the next 28 years... Just Hua Cheng doesn't know about that yet.

Summary
The witcher knew that he himself wasn’t special, that he was just one of the people the hermit decided to save. Probably only because he believed it was the right thing to do.
But his traitorous heart somehow still hoped that, despite how inadequate he was, Xie Lian would keep him by his side. It didn’t matter if he felt the same way as Hua Cheng. It didn’t even matter if he viewed him as a bit of a nuisance, just as long as Hua Cheng was allowed to remain. To protect him from harm, to help him be free from all worries so that he could achieve whatever goals he decided to set for himself.
Yes, it was probably foolish of him and definitely more than a little pathetic. But he could not deny that over the past few months the kind, unassuming man became the center of his universe.
___Or,
Hua Cheng gets gravely injured and finds himself rescued by a mysterious hermit, who might just be more than he lets on.

Usually, it didn't happen on the low side, but he always was an early bloomer, fast and urbane in everything he did. It seems even his biology took after that, as well. His father would call him a chip off the old motherboard, someone who took to the highest possible standard in every regard. Whether that was inside their educational system or working with his fellows on archiving their fascinating (in Erwin’s humble opinion) history.
