She whimpered, squirming and writhing against the thick, muscular coils encircling her. The scales were warm and slick and soft as silk as they slid against her skin, but beneath lay tendon and muscle that was solid and unyielding.
This was not what she had envisioned when she had first encountered the serpent. Entranced by the velvety indigo-dark scales and gleaming white-green eyes, she hadn't run, she hadn't screamed. True, fear had gripped tight about her chest, but she'd been more intrigued than anything else, drawn to the great beast that haunted the high hills above the home of her ancestors. Its wiry wings had shivered and fluttered around its sinuous body, its narrow, elegant head tilting in consideration of her.
