Why Faith didn’t just get the hell out of town, Buffy has no idea. She would have, if it were her. If there was nothing tying her down, no one here to make her stay?
Buffy feels guilty even letting herself imagine it.

He was the only person who ever left her whose abandonment she'd truly earned, and he was the only one who kept coming back.
Events went differently in Season 6, after "Gone", and Buffy and her friends try to get back to what passes for normal on the Hellmouth. But wouldn't you know, as soon as they beat back one interdimensional baddie, the portents of yet another "dark power rising" start to appear. Unfortunately, Willow has seen that this time the demon threat will succeed in wiping Sunnydale off the map — especially if it can recruit the Slayer of Slayers to its side — and that's the best case scenario. This permanent WIP is intended as an alternate season of Buffy.
Note from the poster: This story is entirely by Anna S. (eliade), who has generously allowed me to post her fic to AO3. It is a classic of Buffy fanfic, unfinished and likely to remain so. It has only been available via Wayback Machine for the last several years, and deserves a wider readership. A readership which will soon discover a rich and compelling tale by a master of dialog, characterization, and plotting.

“Oh my god,” Aiden said, way too loud and way too close to my ear. Practically shouted it right in our guests’ faces, which is just rude. “What the fuck.”
Some deranged instinct inside of me, that of the consummate host, took over and powered past the static in my brain. “Uh— why don’t you two come inside. Seems like we have a lot to talk about.” I turned a polite smile on Julia’s truly unbelievable plus-one. “Q, this is Aiden, my husband. Aiden, I’d like you to meet my old friend Quentin Coldwater.”

It’s like—” Eliot lifted the hand with the cigarette still in it and splayed it out in front of him, like painting a sweeping vista in the air. “Like a curtain going up at a theatre. To start, all you see is this slouchy grumpy little guy, with good hair—”
“Hey—”
“Hold on, I’m complimenting you, you just have to let me get there. You see him and you think good hair, great ass, terrible dresser.”
