Summary
Life was just an equation, an existence full of formulas. All James needed to do was put the right pieces together and everything would work as planned. Yeah, those pieces might not fit together easily, or even at all, but at the end of the day it was just what he had to do. After all, it wasn’t as if society was about to make exceptions for him specifically. Especially when that ill-fitting cog in the machine happened to be himself.
So, of course Keith had to throw a wrench in the machine. It wasn’t easy playing a part he was never going to fit into, molding himself into the picture perfect son and student, but it was an unspoken agreement they all unwillingly signed when coming into the world, right? The one that required them to fit in at all costs, even at the sake of their individuality?
But that meant nothing to Keith. He was able to pretend he wasn't the opposite of what the world wanted him to be, as if he was okay carving out his own personal path that no one else would use. Loneliness didn't perturb him, no. Though, it wasn't as if Keith cared for rules in the first place. Breaking some more was nothing new.
This strange pull to keep being around Keith though? That was new.

Dealing with mental health problems was never going to be easy, Lance knew that; depression, anxiety, and ADHD never take a day off. Although, when your friends all understand in their own ways, it's not so lonely.
But his ex-boyfriend from five years ago moving back to town and living with one of his best friends? No, no, no, no, no, that's just one too many things his life has decided to throw at him without asking and there is absolutely no way he was about to open himself up again to the same man who he made the mistake of being so vulnerable with. No way at all.
Oh, Lance has a few choice words to exchange with whatever puppetmaster is putting him up to this.

Desk jockey by day and superhero by night there was nothing Keith found weird anymore. Not people with superhuman abilities making terrible decisions, not the astonishing way his crime-fighting partner could fall on concrete without a scratch, and not even the extraordinary ways his co-workers could mess up the simplest tasks. With his partner in heroics by his side he could conquer everything.
Okay, maybe not everything. Because there was still the whole thing about finding time to pay rent when your secret second job didn't give you a paycheck, having a landlord who kept putting off repairs, and falling for the man he fought crime with every night.
Oh, and the fact his new roommate, Shiro, can lift a bookcase and might just be as secretive as him about his activities in his free time.

If someone had told Keith that spending his early adolescence playing guitar until his fingers bled would lead to him having a suddenly explosive career, constant cameras in his face, a break down in front of tabloids and paparazzi, and being extremely sick of the sound of his own voice, then maybe he would've tried a different way to earn some cash in his youth. Don't let anyone in. That was the rule to live by. After all, it only took one person to break him the first time around.
They told Lance to never meet his idols, they were only an illusion of cameras and scripts. Each and every time he would insist Keith wasn't like that. Now, even after receiving an in-person confirmation of each and every one of Keith’s demons, and seeing just how ready the Twenty-Seven Club was to sink its teeth into him, somehow, Lance would tell them the same thing. Especially when Keith is so willing to help Lance go from unknown performer to rising star faster than he ever imagined.
From day one Keith warned him fame ruins people. But Lance swore up and down that would never happen to him. It couldn't, he was too careful.
