I am a horrendous idiot I can't believe I didn't bookmark this until now. Anyway, this is the fic that started my own journey into jotajosu. The narrative here is complex and thoughtful and touches on so many painfully relatable emotions and family dynamics and it is truly one of the best written jotajosu fics I've encountered. One of the best fanfiction pieces I've ever read, hands down. Please give it a try. Maximum pain & catharsis. It's incredible.

The Anachronism tag is wonderfully accurate, both for the content as well as the charming and incredibly well crafted prose. This reads like a proper ode to Victorian novels. It's engaging, entertaining, with a twist of grimdark that is balanced so well by periods of humor. The characterizations are vibrant and I was wholly sucked in. Couldn't put this fic down for two days. Dio is such a good villain and in this fic, I truly found myself rooting for him. Going on a lifelong journey with this portrayal of these characters was a delight from start to finish. This piece is absolutely masterful. 10/10 I will be reading it again.

Summary
The courier was a good man, inoffensive, who limped and shuffled from town to town, drawing letters or packages out of his long pockets, bringing well-wishes and gifts, news and postcards. He shook hands, kissed babies, and told wild stories about places he'd been to. It was easy to travel with him, an easy pace, sleeping under the stars or eating hot plates on kindly strangers' porches. He always said softly he didn't want trouble. He never wanted any trouble. At first they all figured him for a kindly older gentleman, some poor cripple who might have been a veteran.
But when the gang recovers two stealth devices from the nightkin, the courier cooks up one wild scheme after another to rescue NCR soldiers and bring justice to Vegas fiends. What started as running deliveries soon spirals into bounty hunting, with a mix of superior technology and ideas crazy enough to work. Boone goes from the bodyguard of a rag-tag wandering outfit to a wasteland enforcer, losing his grip on reality under the influence of the Stealth Boy, and troubled by nightmares of the dead, the courier must confront at last the secrets of his past.
