I never expected to read this. I stumbled across it while looking for something else. But by God am I glad I found it. It's a complete au with inspiration from Canon so you don't need to know the comics or the series to read it, but knowing the characters helps as I was squealing aloud at every name that I recognised. It's beautifully written, and beautifully researched. It kept me on tenterhooks and I read the whole thing in just under two hours, I literally couldn't put it down. Wow. Oh my god.
I'm just realising that I seem to have written an actual book review for this, but I'm not mad. It left me with a lot of thoughts and feelings and it's definitely a fic that I'm going to be coming back to

He's only here for an obligatory hour or two to appease the higher-ups at Vanity Fair and then he can go back to his hotel room and take a shower or something. He's got a deadline breathing down his neck, the piece he was putting together on the new Sex and The City reboot, he'd much rather be in his hotel room with his laptop and headphones on.
Granted, Aki's not one for parties at the best of times, much less when the party in question is the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party and the Wallis Center is filled and all but heaving with the sheer volume of combined star power.
Aki's probably written about most of these people, has definitely interviewed at least half of the people in his immediate vicinity.

Summary
Max doesn't go to college.
Aki leaves, Audrey leaves, everyone graduates and moves on, but Max stays in New York City.
With a budding career in modeling, a somewhat stable life, and his sobriety being managed, Max seems to be doing well. If the loneliness consumes him so fully at nights that he can hardly bear it, the sun erases any traces by morning. He's doing fine.
Aki doesn't believe him.
