Mirabel had been a prostitute for the past few years as she had run away from her abusive family and hadn’t been able to find any work that paid as well given she hadn’t finished her education. She’d done alright she made just enough to from having to go back home. Some of the other prostitutes who she worked with gave her some advice never fall in love with a client even if they came back for her even if they told her he loved her that all these men were just out for a quick fuck and would leave her so she shouldn’t get attached to them. She had been able to follow that advice until she met Isabela Madrigal.

Mirabel's gift was extraordinary and just as special as her. She had the gift of giving anyone happiness. From writing a sweet letter for someone to even just giving them a hug, it would bring a smile to anyone's faces. Sometimes, she could even make a bad day disappear with just a few words!
But there are selfish and uncaring people in the world and when they take Mirabel away from her family just to make her constantly cheer their child up, it makes Mirabel wonder if her gift was actually to bring others happiness... at the expense of her own.

Nobody reacted. And, when she finally figured out that she froze time, it rewound. And rewound. And rewound. until she lived through the same moment over and over and it only stopped when she exhausted herself, falling to her knees and bawling. Abuela looked perturbed, and she tried to ignore the sinking feeling in her gut.)
