I'm trying not to look up as she tightrope walks barefoot across the sill. She's all peachy legs from this angle. The soft blonde fuzz across her calf catches the light of the overhead bulb. (A daylight bulb. She made me install the thing for my 'mental health'. I hate the cold light it sheds on everything. It feels clinical. Only Amber can glow under it, while I squint- bacteria caught in a Petrie dish, unwilling to be studied up close.)

Those had been Paragon’s words to me, on that fateful morning. I had nearly made my peace with the fate of leaving my Catalyst to trace his own path, unencumbered by the oppressive nudge of my cruel hand, steering the narrative of his life to my leisure. Reality, as usual, had imposed itself: I must once more meddle with his life again, plunging him into danger and hoping to pull him back, unscathed. I had lost count of how many days had passed since the Fool had said those words to me. Though Chade’s grim promises of forbidding the Fool from sailing into his life’s purpose – a Convergence, he had called it – had soothed the worst of my raging fears, the words of the Fool’s final prophecy lurked untamed in the dark crevices of my mind. I needed only close my eyes to see their fiery brand on the back of my eyelids, flashing brighter the closer the day of our departure. In the throes of that fear, I knew only this: I musn't allow it to be.

Knew this from books and movies, teen sitcoms and radio hosts, the few anecdotes that thread their way across the social fabric at Cambridge. Could spread the information on a graphic and say, "yes, this is the year most people drink." It had never been a question he'd asked or wanted to answer. For all his hyperactive thought, his nitpicking and overanalysis, his introspective scrutiny, he'd danced the outskirts of this dilemma by claiming age a hindrance. He'd set the doomsday clock and forgotten to hit snooze.—

“I talked to Gansey,” Adam said after Ronan had thrown the last of their clothing off their bodies.
Ronan grinned, coy and suggestive; it should be illegal, Adam thought, to look that good under shitty fluorescent hotel lights.
“And what did God’s favorite have to say?” Ronan asked.
“He told me he wanted to reconnect.”
Ronan made a noise of disbelief. “And?”
“I told him to throw Preakness. Then we could reconnect.”
Ronan laughed through a shark-toothed smile. “You’re a little shit, Adam.” Then, softer: “You know he doesn’t need to do that.”
“Don’t get sappy on me, Lynch.”
“What?” Ronan rolled his hips against Adam, desire curling low in Adam’s spine. “Don’t want me to say how good you are?” Teeth against ear lobe. “ That you’re a better jockey than Gansey?”
Adam Parrish is favored to win the Kentucky Derby. Richard Gansey, Adam's childhood best friend turned rival, keeps getting in the way of him winning the Triple Crown, which Adam doesn't know how to deal with. Ronan Lynch, Adam's boyfriend, just wants him to be happy.
