He's surprised he made it to Buck's in one piece, driving through a haze, on autopilot towards the one person who can take the jumbled pieces of Eddie's mind and gently slot them back into place. He doesn't even register the time of day until he’s opening the door to loft with his key and saying,
“Hen thinks I should go on a date with a man,” which he guesses is paraphrasing, but you know. It's what she meant.

He unlocks the door thinking a little nonsensically about the buddy system. We have to stick together, he thinks as Buck moves immediately to the heating controls, turning the AC on with a familiar clank-hum, it’s safer that way. Buck turns to face him, opens his mouth to say something but then Eddie is there, closing the distance, kissing him. We have to stick together Buck’s lips are warm so we won’t get lost and the noise he makes isn’t as surprised as it maybe should be so we can take care of each other but he still pulls back it’s safer, please, it’s safer this way.

Buck swallows thickly and reaches for the marriage certificate, passing it to Eddie.
"Don’t panic but I think we might have accidentally gotten married." He lets out a breath, bracing himself for the worst case scenario.
'Don't panic', he says, which is rich coming from Buck since he feels like all he'll be able to do for the foreseeable future is panic.
Eddie doesn’t react, which is kinda great and definitely something Buck can work with, but he’s also honestly a little worried Eddie went catatonic.
“Married?” Eddie repeats, in a hollow voice.from the tumblt prompt: "Don’t panic but I think we might have accidentally gotten married."

“You okay?”
Buck freezes, heart jumping right up to his throat. He turns a little too quickly, nearly knocking him off balance before a hand shoots out, wrapping around his bicep to steady him. Buck blinks up at Eddie and all the fight bleeds out of him as he throws himself into Eddie’s arms.
“Oh god,” he wheezes as he chokes back a sob, “Eddie, I—I’m so sorry!”
He feels Eddie’s hands — strong, steady, and warm — wrap around him before he is unceremoniously shoved backwards. Buck feels all the air punch out of his lungs when his back hits the firetruck.
“Who the hell are you?”
Buck’s mouth falls open as he looks at Eddie. As he looks at the person that knows him better than anyone else in the world. The person that he loves with every fiber of his being. He looks at Eddie and realizes that Eddie has no idea who he is.

“Everything okay?” Eddie asks, rolling onto his side to face him.
Buck nods. “Yeah, I just…I think we should talk. Before we do anything else.”
All the warmth that has been filling Eddie’s body since he woke up suddenly chills.
Buck must read Eddie’s expression, but he hastens to say, “No, no, a good talk! I think. I hope.” He gives him a shy little smile through his lashes. “I just…need to make sure we’re both on the same page. About what this means for…for us.”

Eddie kisses him in the kitchen.
Bright morning sunshine spills in the window over the sink, picking out the golden flecks in Eddie’s eyes. He cradles Buck’s jaw with one warm palm, and Buck freezes for a moment, startled, before surging against Eddie. He’s still holding a hot mug of coffee that he barely fumbles onto the counter without dropping or spilling all over his shirt.
He rakes his fingers into Eddie’s hair and reels him in closer, Eddie’s firm thigh slotted between his.
“Eddie,” he pants as Eddie scrapes his teeth down his throat and sucks on the spot over his racing pulse.
Eddie hums as he rucks Buck’s t-shirt up and splays his hand over his back, hot like a brand on his bare skin. Buck gasps, which Eddie swallows in another heated kiss, licking into Buck’s mouth and doing his best to scatter all of Buck’s thoughts.OR Buck and Eddie are FWB, act like boyfriends, and are suuuuper dumb and oblivious about everything.

Summary
There aren't a lot of places Buck can sit comfortably with his thoughts, but here—out on the water, body weightless as long as he lies still, no sound but the lap of the waves and the breath thrumming in his chest—here there's nothing in the world to drag him down, no anger no worry and, most of all, no regrets to fill his lungs and suffocate him. Here on the water it's fine that he's alone.
He wonders if Maddie felt alone when she died.
