Buck’s memory exists in fits and starts. Flashes. Bangs. Colours and voices. Nothing quite coalesces into anything solid. He remembers waking up in the morning, the warm weight of a broad chest at his back, the dry press of lips to his shoulder. He remembers school drop-off, remembers going through the Starbucks drive-thru, a gentle hand on his knee as he rattled off their orders.
He remembers walking through the firehouse doors. Things get a little bit scrambled after that. Like the eggs they had for breakfast.

Summary
When the 118 find out about Buck’s secret thirst account on Instagram – to raise fire safety awareness, obviously – they make fun of him the appropriate amount and move on. Eddie, who has had some recent and birthmark-shaped revelations about his feelings, finds it a little harder to do the same.
Of course, Eddie would never invade Buck’s privacy by searching for and finding the anonymous account. Or looking at all the uploaded photos late at night. Or even directly messaging Buck’s secret account. That would be weird, because he’s certainly not planning on doing anything about his newfound attraction.
However, anonymous account @elbombero118 has no such limitations.

“What happens to me when you guys get divorced?”
The question is so abrupt it takes Buck a couple of seconds to fully process it.
In that time, Christopher turns his head so his eyes settle on Buck’s and this time Buck doesn’t push away the need to shelter him, he embraces the feeling just as he embraces Christopher, one arm wrapping around Christopher’s shoulders. Christopher leans his body against Buck, and Buck’s heart soars and hurts in equal measures.

Summary
Eddie groans, but he gets down on his knee, setting their beers on the pavement. He works to unknot the laces, then ties them again. He goes to stand, but Buck stops him with a hand on his shoulder.
“Eddie…” he looks up to see that Buck’s eyes are the size of dinner plates. He leans on his knee, trying to understand why Buck is so flustered, and then he hears the shutter of a camera. In his peripheral, he sees that a crowd has gathered around them, and half of the people have their phones out, recording.
Eddie’s eyes connect with Buck’s, and while he is panicked, Buck is trying so hard not to laugh that there are tears gathering in the corners of his eyes. The crowd must see it and misread it as Buck being overcome with emotion, because they coo in response.
“Fuck,” Eddie curses under his breath, quiet enough that only Buck can hear him. “What do I do here?”
Buck snorts, “Sorry man, I think you’ve got to commit now.”

“And unlike some people we know,” he continues, “David and I are going to have an actual wedding.”
“How can you be so sure?” Eddie asks before he can stop himself.
Michael looks at him knowingly. “We don’t always get it right the first time around. David, though... he makes being sure easy.”

The first kiss you can almost call an accident if you squint, and you ignore the fact that Eddie and Buck have been dancing around each other with a little more intent than usual ever since Buck ended it with Taylor. Things hit a breaking point when they decide to carpool to Hen and Karen’s house on the afternoon of the wedding. Somehow, Eddie didn’t consider that Buck would show up at his door looking clean and polished as if he stepped off the pages of a goddamn magazine in a suit that’s just asking to get peeled off his body.

Eddie squints at him. It’s not exactly well-lit in here, but he’s still about ninety percent sure that this guy was not with Emilio’s bachelor party when they came in. “Do I know you?”
“Um. No,” the guy says. He’s got wide blue eyes and a nervous smile and a salt-rimmed margarita glass clutched in one large hand. As Eddie watches, he glances over his shoulder, then hunches down like he’s trying to hide. Given the size of him, it’s more ridiculous than effective. “So this is going to sound completely nuts, and I promise I’ll explain, but can I throw this frozen margarita in your face and call you a jerk?”

Summary
Therein lies the crux of the Buck problem. Eddie’s in love with Buck, he knows it and thinks he has subconsciously known it for a while now. And he thinks that Buck loves him, too, knows that if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be spending every night at Eddie’s home and caring for his son as if he was his own, wouldn’t offer to drive Eddie to and from physical therapy appointments without making it seem like a hassle. But Buck deserves someone who can give him everything he needs, who can have his back all the time, and Eddie knows that he can’t be that person right now.
Because Buck deserves to be completely enveloped in love and affection, and Eddie can’t physically give him that, his constantly aching and useless arm an ever-present reminder. All he has to give is a one-armed hug, a broken mug, and a heart that wants too much that he doesn’t deserve.

Buck grinned as he led Christopher to the bus, where a harried looking woman with a clipboard took a glance at Chris before ticking off a box on her paperwork. Her attention then redirected to Buck. "Mr. Diaz? I don't think we've met. I'm Christopher's Art teacher."
"Mrs. Conrad." Buck pointed at her knowingly. "I'm a fan. Your homework assignments are my favorite. Mostly because I can do them."
She laughed. "Glad to hear it. But I didn't think we'd be seeing you. Chris mentioned his dad would be at work today."
"Oh, that's—"
"Daddy is working," Christopher informed her. "This is Buck. He's my other dad."
Or, Christopher refers to Buck as his dad for the first time, and Buck has feelings.
