Isn’t your…” His left hand does something complicated in a strange flourish, as though grappling for the right word. “... actual father, here somewhere?” It doesn’t sound like the word he’d been searching for, the common honorific somehow sounding foreign in his mouth.
“I was with him,” she admits, thinking about Geralt because he is the closest thing to a father she has now. “But… we got separated.”
The stranger raised an unimpressed eyebrow. “So, now you’re looking to adopt a new one?”

Alternatively: When Ciri gets separated from Geralt, she has to rely on the kindness of one reluctant stranger until she can find the witcher again. She doesn't intend to get attached - and it's apparent that neither does the stranger - but destiny always finds a way to fuck things up.

“You…uh…” Whatever he was going to ask died in his throat as Alastor turned his head to nuzzle his palm.
Lucifer’s brain may have short circuited at that while other parts of him abruptly came online.
Alastor blinked, some of the newfound haziness leaving his eyes as he turned back to face him. He continued to lean into his touch. “You were saying?”
Oh, fuck, how had Lucifer never noticed how hot his voice was before?
“Uh…”
Husk started making frantic shooing motions too from where he stood by the doors.
“…you wanna see my rubber duck collection..?”
Alastor blinked. “What.”
Angel dropped his head back into his hands in defeat.

Alastor's rut comes earlier than expected. Lucifer volunteers as tribute. An awkward few days and one existential crisis later, Lucifer might just realize his budding feelings aren't as one-sided as he thought.

Summary
So we come to Lucifer’s grand idea, his sneaking around the staff bathroom because he could hear the shower on and he just had to be vewy vewy quiet, he was hunting radio demons and in the shower, there was no place to hide. They’d be able to deal with his injury bullshit and that would be it, it would be over, all good, deed done and dusted. They could go back to normal.
“Aha, see!” Lucifer declared, opening the bathroom shower with such a righteous vindication that it took him an embarrassing three beats to realise that wasn’t Alastor. “Shit!”
Lucifer is just trying to do a nice thing so his daughter doesn't lose anyone else, but it turns out getting Alastor to admit to being injured is a bit like trying to have a conversation with a parrot: not impossible, but you're probably not going to get what you need out of it. Time to get creative.

Alastor reached out with one hand again, laying it palm-up on the table.
Lucifer stared. “What?”
“Dance with me,” Alastor murmured, the smile that curved his mouth as insouciant as anything Lucifer had ever seen. “That is, assuming you are even capable.”
Weak after Charlie’s birth, Lucifer has no choice but to flee Hell when Adam brings an army of Exterminators and Heavenly Princes to his doorstep. With Lilith dead, Hell in shambles, and Lucifer in no position to right it, he flees to the only place he can think of: Earth. The human world is much different than he remembers, however, and his plan to simply keep himself and Charlie secluded in the first human city he lands in hits a snag when the woman from next door takes an interest in them and the strange radio show that, for months, has been Lucifer’s only mode of lulling his daughter to sleep, bringing her mysterious son into Lucifer's false life and threatening to bring the whole facade crashing down.
