Summary
Andrew was seven years old the first and last time he ever prayed. He hadn’t expected anything to come of it. Not really.
Praying was just something you did because a grown-up told you that you were supposed to. Like saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, or double-knotting your shoes. It wasn’t anything more than a polite precaution in case there really was some omnipotent entity out there watching over them.
Andrew had never bought into the whole Jesus Myth, but tonight he was just desperate enough to give it a shot.

When they got home the girls collapsed on the couch, boneless. Andrew put on a children’s TV show for them to watch as he and Neil made a kid-style charcuterie board with cut-up string cheeses, pieces of pepperoni, ham, and salami, and an assortment of crackers.
He knew he would be vacuuming crumbs out of the carpet and couch for the next week, but he couldn’t feel all that bothered about it. They were only this young once. There were more things to worry about in the world than messy kids.

Neil stood in front of Matt and Dan’s apartment building, wringing his hands as he stared up the side of the building as though he were going to be able to pinpoint the unit his friends were in by sheer force of will alone.
“Relax.” Andrew huffed, stepping up onto the cub beside him. For his part, he didn’t look at all nervous about this whole situation. Neil didn’t get it.
“What if it doesn’t like me? Or what if I hurt it?” Neil looked over at the shorter man who didn’t return his gaze in favor of picking at his peeling black nail polish.
“It is a human child, not a bomb or fine china.” Andrew retorted, taking the first step toward the building, forcing Neil to follow.

There were a whole host of distinctly human aspirations and emotions Neil had assigned to the destructive forces of nature they chased after, but that wasn't a conversation you had over coffee with a near stranger.

It's a simple fact. The sky is blue, 80% of his income goes to Ichirou Moriyama, Kevin will always be upset whenever he wears Bears merch, and Neil Abram Josten loves Andrew Minyard.
But it almost slips out. Somewhere between his brain and his tongue, his usual filter seems to have dismissed itself from duty, and those three words are very nearly said with the same kind of easiness as hey. Like this is their usual greeting. Like this is a typical back-and-forth. Like this is something they say to each other at all.
The day Neil moves in with Andrew, three words just won't disappear from his tongue.

Neil was facing forward, worrying at his lip and staring at nothing. Andrew waited patiently, offering his hand palm up in silent support. Neil laced their fingers together without hesitation.
“How did you know you were trans?” he finally asked, squeezing Andrew’s hand minutely.
“Do you mean when did I first feel like something wasn’t quite right with my gender, or when I finally came across the term transgender and put it all together?”
The redhead’s brow furrowed and his bite on his lip intensifying.
“I guess I mean more like… what does gender feel like for you and how is it different from the gender you were assigned at birth?” Neil’s voice went up at the end, as if he wasn’t totally sure that was what he’d meant either.
