"You know, I think I'd want a farmhouse."
"A what?" Sam turns to look at him, slightly annoyed. This was the first thing Bucky has said in the past hour and a half they've been cramped in this god forsaken car. He had a knack for impulsively voicing his dumb thoughts at the worst times, but whenever you wanted to know what was actually going on in that head of his, he'd never say.
They were staking out the front gate of a large mansion, very much not a farmhouse. It was mind numbingly boring, being stuck in a beetle with absolutely nothing else to do than stare at the gaudy gates of some rich asshole.
"A farmhouse," Bucky repeats nonchalantly, "If we ever get out of this business, or you know, live long enough to retire maybe--- I want a farmhouse. With a lot of animals."

Bucky keeps talking about a farmhouse and it drives Sam crazy, that is until he finally asks why.

“Hey.” Bucky stops writing to look at him again, hitting the pen sharply on the paper. Sam holds his arms open and without hesitation, Bucky puts his journal on the nightstand and collapses in Sam’s lap. He sighs as Sam immediately moves to run his hands through his long hair. “Are you with me?
“Yeah…Yeah, I’m with you,” He replies softly as Sam leans down to kiss his forehead. “And what about you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you with me?” He repeats back to Sam. Bucky turns, his blue eyes staring up at him.

When Sam sits down at the table with him, joined by a bowl of cereal, Bucky’s bedroom door swings open. He walks into the room, hair dripping wet, with a towel slung around his shoulders. Steve sees his eyes linger over the flowers first.
“Where’d these flowers come from?” He asks, gesturing to the vase on the table. Steve and Sam both shrug, too exhausted to really care. Then Bucky asks a strange question, “Do... you guys like them?” He plays with the towel around his neck.
He phrases it like it’s meant for Steve too, but Bucky is looking at Sam when he asks, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

They come upon a building with a sign that reads ‘It’s a Small World.’
“That one?” Bucky replies incredulously, “That is literally the most non-threatening ride I’ve ever seen.”
There’s a devious grin on Sam’s face that Bucky does not like one bit. “You’ll see.”
They ride. He sees.
“I take it back. That was terrifying.”

The kind of hair that’s nice to touch, he hears Sam say again, and reaches for one of the bottles.
It’s different than soap. Smells nice, like fruit and flowers. The shampoo lathers up soft as clouds, washes away easy. Conditioner’s worse; he can’t tell when it’s fucking rinsed out, his hair feels weird. But he grabs the plastic comb - yes, thank you, Wilson, he does know what a goddamn comb is, he’s not a barbarian - and it slides through without catching, like all the knots are just gone. There could be benefits, he’s willing to admit.
