“Sam,” Wanda’s voice at his elbow was quiet but urgent, pulling lightly on the sleeve of his smoke-singed suit. “They’ve got the Soldier.”
“What?” Sam immediately looked up and scanned the crowd around them. Squinting through the dizzying mess of flashing lights, craning his neck over the milling crowds, he finally caught a glimpse of that scraggly mop of dark brown hair near the edge of the perimeter, just under the harsh flood lights that had been hastily erected after emergency personnel arrived. Bucky was standing very still, hands behind his back, staring blankly into the shadowy wreckage of the Avengers compound while a short, heavyset police officer slapped cuffs onto his wrists.
“Get Steve,” Sam told Wanda. And then he ran.

The universe seemed to think Sam might want to. Bucky disagreed. He and Sam tolerated each other. Sam was funny, sure, loyal, definitely, attractive, no doubt. But none of that screamed soulmate... right?

He didn’t get a reply for a long time after that. And even then, it didn’t seem to help.

Sam knew his head hurt before he knew he woke. And that consciousness had found him sooner than he’d want. His hands were bound in front of him and tied off somewhere above, elevating them enough to lose feeling even when he slowly flexed. At least nothing else hurt any more than it had after he’d taken stock from jumping out of a collapsing building into a moving helicopter. He peeked out one eye to see if there was anything worth seeing.
What the fuck.
It was a minivan, and he was trussed up like a hog ready for the Cajun microwave. Someone had shoved a blanket down between him and the seat, saving him from being jabbed by the seatbelt buckles. The car moved at a good clip, streetlights flashing by a sky that wasn’t quite as dark as when he’d left Steve’s bedside. Sam knew he hadn’t been out too long, body still in too good of shape for anything longer than a couple of hours.
The Winter Soldier had gone easy on him again.

And because of that, Hydra finally finds out who the Winter Soldier’s soulmate is.

Summary
He’s in a private hospital room- one in the military hospital back on base, if he had to guess. There’s an IV in his elbow, and a heart monitor, and a whole host of other machines that he can’t quite get a look at from here. There’s a single, tiny window in the corner, though any light passing through it is dimmed by closely-drawn blinds. And by the bedside there’s Bucky, slumped in a cramped plastic chair, his arms folded. He’s glaring at the heart monitor’s screen with narrowed eyes. He doesn’t seem to notice Sam at all.
“Morning, sunshine,” Sam tries to say. What he manages is more of a rough, hacking cough. Bucky snaps to attention like he’s just been administered an electric shock. Sam is half-surprised that he doesn’t leap out of his chair.
