“You are more precious than any of the gold on their ships,” she had said with a gentle hand on his cheek and a gaze of quiet grief that let Chan know she would not see him again. “Make them earn it.” In the black of the night, the warm salt breeze whipping through his shirt and the waves licking at his shins, Chan took her words to heart. He holds them close to his heart in gentle, callused hands as he rots in the brig of this god forsaken ship, the ocean he could never leave behind only kept feet away by inches of swollen lumber.
