The Downworlders finally rose against the Shadowhunters and took over, leaving all surviving Shadowhunters captured and sold for the powerful Downworlders' amusement and as food sources for the vampires.
Simon is shocked to find Jace at such an auction and buys the Shadowhunter to keep him safe. Jace agrees to play the part of the king's pet, to project the image of strength that Simon needed, but then he develops feelings.
