Summary
Shane stepped off the ice as a flurry of Ottawa jerseys flew over the boards to replace him and his linemates. Sweat poured down his brow as he collapsed onto the bench, hastily squirting water into his open mouth. He wiped at his eyes as he glanced from the Jumbotron to the ice and back again. Thirty-eight seconds. Thirty-seven. Thirty-six. They were going to win. His body was buzzing as the crowd roared their approval when Ilya cleanly stole the puck off a Colorado Avalanche defenseman. Ilya’s face was set in a hard line of concentration as he sent the puck sailing back to their zone, where Wyatt collected it behind the net. Twenty-two seconds. Shane rose to his feet, the melee of sounds muffled by the blood pounding in his ears. This would be his fourth Stanley Cup trophy, but it had never felt like this before. Terror over a last-second goal combined with disbelief and a flicker of hope. He clung to that little flame of hope as the seconds ticked away.
Shane earns a very, very nice reward for his performance in the playoffs.

Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.
Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.
But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.
