Leon had already decided a long time ago that he didn't want to die, he just didn't care if he did. He didn't plan far ahead, just tried to get through the moment until he could crawl back to his apartment, or some seedy bar and drink himself into oblivion. At this point, he didn't even care to keep it a secret anymore, Chris and Rebecca had already seen him like this, drunk, depressed and one more bad night away from shoving his gun into his own mouth. And they decided to take the moral high ground and drag him back into hell with them, so what if everyone knew he was a moody piece of shit? He was still an excellent agent and as long as he finished his missions no one would bat an eye to the mess he made of himself.

Set during TPP era onwards with flashbacks to PW. After waking up from his coma and learning about Cipher's plan with Venom Snake, Big Boss routinely disguises himself and sneaks back to Diamond Dogs in secret to see his former partner and lover Kazhuira Miller and keep a watch over him as the events of MGSV unfold.
On doing this he has to grapple with seeing the changes in Kaz after his torture in Afghanistan, not being able to contact him directly without giving away his secret, and, of course, watching Kaz grow closer and closer to Venom Snake, the man who Kaz thinks he is in love with...

Summary
Too much of his life has been lost to people he couldn’t trust. Up until now, Hal wasn’t— couldn’t be— one of them. The reasons for this are deep and complicated, fostered by two years of friendship and an unnamed something that has been nestled in David’s breast since Shadow Moses, but he is a creature of habit by nature. It’s saved his life before, and habit creeps up on him again now, reminding him to be on edge. Reminding him that there is someone untrustworthy in the same room as him, and he should have his back to a wall.
After the Tanker Incident, Snake and Otacon attempt a frantic mission to steal a body, and try and repair the trust that broke between them.

However, he simply refuses to accept their fate, and vows to save Dave at all costs. As he fights to keep them both safe from the dangers all around them, and as he races the clock against the infection brewing in Dave’s lungs, he doesn’t notice that his own time is running out.

Snake used to say: "I'm blue collar, you're white collar." It was a half-joke that marked an easy divide in their roles, between the physical and the technical.
Otacon can't really agree, not when his white collar is so often stained with his partner's blood. It's hands-on work he could never have anticipated, but someone's gotta do it.
If only he wasn't so squeamish.
