His eyes sting. At the very least, Buck contains the sound of it in his voice. “Eddie, I don’t know if you’ve noticed,” he replies, “but I already am.”
Eddie self-implodes. Christopher, seeking refuge, flees to Buck—whose priorities amount to, in varying order: take in the kid, get Eddie to talk to him, and keep the three of them afloat in the process. (Oh, and Tommy’s there too. He thinks.)

There's another silence, a brief one. Eddie's stomach swoops like he's in freefall. Then Buck says, even lower, "What would you do? If you were here?"
Eddie breathes in, sharp. He feels like he's standing on the edge of a cliff, the sheer drop as inviting as it is terrifying. L'appel du vide, the call of the void. There have been studies on it; he's pretty sure Buck is the one who told him that. The urge, in a high place, to jump.

"It's a serious problem," Chimney confirms solemnly. "Poor little kids from Texas, all thinking that babies come from storks."

Summary
Winning streaks aren't real, and neither are losing streaks. It's all just a glitch of the human brain, finding patterns where there are none. Eddie, dedicated skeptic that he is, would definitely tell him that in the same fondly condescending tone he uses to explain to Buck that jinxes and hexes aren't real, seriously, cursed bracelets and q-word shifts from hell notwithstanding.
He wonders sometimes if Eddie has changed his tune on that now, but he's definitely not going to ask him. There's a Christopher-shaped hole in their conversations these days, and the edges are still sharp. And Buck doesn't want to know if this has finally made Eddie come around to the idea that maybe he's cursed.

If only they can make it through the year without killing each other, it should be all right, shouldn't it?

Eddie’s silent for long enough that Buck chances a glance at him. His brow is furrowed deeply, and he’s frowning at Buck.

Eddie grins, the kind of Eddie smile that says 'you’re both annoying but also I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.' He seems – when you first meet him – to be someone with only a few expressions. Smug. Stoic. Manly smile. Etcetera. But once you know him, you realise there’s a whole dictionary of expressions. His open-mouthed smile when something crazy, but funny is happening to someone else on a call. His 'you guys are being ridiculous head tilt', and the smirking set of his lips. The twinkle in his eyes when he talks about how Christopher’s doing in school. The serious set of his jaw when he knows he’s heading into a difficult rescue. Buck likes learning them, like a secret little victory of their friendship.

Afterwards, when Buck is lying half on top of Eddie, come sticky between them, and Eddie can’t bring himself to stop touching Buck, Buck murmurs, “It doesn’t have to be a one night stand. This was good, right?”
“Yeah,” Eddie agrees, probably the best sex he’s ever had, actually.
“So it could be…a friends with benefits thing. People do it all the time.”
Probably not with their best friend, Eddie thinks, but then again he doesn’t think there’s anything they could break by making this a regular thing that wouldn’t have already broken after last night.

Pressing his hand further on Eddie’s shoulder, because he knows Eddie like no one has ever known him before, like no one will ever know him again, Buck asks, “Here?”
Eddie nods, tightening his fingers around Buck’s forearm.
“It’s kind of…” Eddie pauses to find the perfect words, until he realizes he doesn’t need them. “It’s kind of for you. And for me. For us. You could… I’d like you to get it too.”
The corners of Buck’s lips curl in a soft smile as his fingers curl around Eddie’s shoulder. “I’d like to get it too.”

“Oh no, we’re not doing this.” Chimney pops a bubble with the gum he’s been chewing as he moves one of his fingers back and forth to point between The-Man-who-isn’t-Buck’s-man-he’s-just-The-Man and Buck. “You didn’t drag me to the gym just so you can ditch me to fuck some guy in the showers."
Buck lowers his voice, leaning forward as if trying to make the words’s journey shorter between him and Chimney so they can’t escape and reach anyone else’s ears,“I wouldn’t fuck him in the showers.”
Chimney’s response is wordless in the form of an eyebrow raise.
“Not anymore, okay?” Buck clarifies, rolling his eyes. “That’s not who I am now."
(spoiler alert: Buck does fuck the guy in the showers. but that comes after nicknaming him Big Beautiful Brown Eyes, finding out his name is actually Eddie, becoming his best friend, and falling madly in love with him.)

Summary
Eddie thought it would be easier.
He has Buck now, and he's never letting him go. But dating is- complicated in a way it wasn't supposed to be.
First, there's the fact that they don't know who they're supposed to tell. They don't know if they should tell Bobby or Chim or Maddie or- god, Chris. Eddie doesn't know how to act now- doesn't know when he's supposed to kiss Buck and when he's just supposed to pat his back and give him a hopeful smile.
They've been friends for so long the shift between them it's almost invisible, a step forward so awkwardly taken, full of fear and repression and nervousness. Eddie hates that dating Buck involves so much- thinking.
But it's worth it.Or, Eddie has spent so long thinking about kissing Buck that he never dared to imagine what would happen after. Now, he gets to keep secrets, come out to everyone, dance in the kitchen, deal with the consequences of dating a coworker, come up with petnames, face years of fear and repression, and slowly learn to go from having a best friend to having a boyfriend. At least he gets to do it with Buck.
