Summary
In the years since Snezhnaya declared war on Mondstadt, the wind-borne nation has struggled to protect its citizens while producing enough machinery to sustain its forces. Soon, hope arrives in the form of reinforcements from Liyue. From the Jade Chamber Airship to the Crux Fleet of naval barges, Liyue’s forces are particularly impressive — but none as eye-catching as the renowned Adeptus Special Forces, a talented group of soldiers that specializes in using large mechanical animals for combat.
Venti is a Communications Officer for Mondstadt, where he’s responsible for relaying orders from leaders in the war room to the soldiers in the field. He’s assigned to work with the Liyue forces, and he quickly falls in love with Xiao, an Adeptus who operates a giant automaton in the shape of a garuda. Venti is the first to sneak Xiao away for a drink under the stars, but he’s also the first to hear when things go wrong and Xiao’s comms are suddenly cut off.
All's fair in love and war, and with Xiao on the front lines, all Venti can do is hope that the wind will bring his lover home.

It left an indelible scar upon the soul, a mark that might never fade. Xiao had sworn to himself, many lifetimes ago, that he would never again taste the delicate fabric of another dream. But that vow didn’t mean he couldn’t indulge in the quiet solace of mere observation. To slip briefly into what it had once been like, to know peace, and invisibly spectate others' happiness.
OR: Xiao stumbled into Venti's dreams, and slowly, he falls in love.

Xiao preferred solitude. It was as simple as that—no friends, no connections, no vulnerability. But here he was, fulfilling his adoptive father's wish to learn the piano for his grand day. As if playing in front of hundreds wasn't nerve-wracking enough, his tutor certainly was.
A musical genius, described as a 'drunkard,' how could Xiao ever get along with someone like that? But when simple lessons turn into late-night talks and hesitant affection grows into a fragile bond, Xiao begins to question everything he thought he wanted—and what he truly feels. After all, he doesn't want Venti... does he?

Zhongli tasked him with keeping Venti occupied until a solution is found, so that's precisely what Xiao does - he focuses Venti's attention on himself.
