Kate Austen, freshly sixteen and wired like a goddamn faulty electrical outlet, had been at Abbott Farm since the sun was a rumor on the horizon. Abbott Farm was her sanctuary, her escape pod from the simmering tension and eventual explosions of Wayne’s drunken evenings back at the house that was supposed to be a home. She’d already fed the irritable old gelding in stall three, wrestled with a stubborn water trough, and was now methodically cleaning out the stall designated for the "new arrival." Some rich girl’s pony, probably. Kate snorted. Whatever. Money was money, and Mr. Abbott paid fair.

Juliet’s expression was a mask of cool indifference, but her eyes, those piercing blue eyes, held a flicker of something wild. She didn’t even glance at Kate’s hand, so close to her body. “I simply answered his questions, Kate. It’s called a conversation. You should try it sometime."
