Devi tries to search his face for a reaction, tries to calculate how much she’s hurt him and if his mood might allow her to punch him in the face without him calling the cops. She might journal her findings, she thinks, save them away to mull over come nightfall, but he’s looking at her now, I mean really looking at her, like he’s just realized who she was.
He shakes his head so slightly she might have missed it if she weren’t hyper tuned to every movement he made, and then he’s leaning in and kissing her and oh god.

Summary
That’s what this is, it is electric. Charged. Alight and alive, glowing in the dark. He and Devi, it seems, are like something nocturnal— they’re sharp and pointed and awake during the day, yes, but there are layers to their relationship, and it seems to Ben, that the only time they are able to peel them back is in the dark.
Someone bumps into Devi and she crashes into him, colliding like a meteor into the Earth, and he catches her. She rights herself, still pressed against him, and there is a moment in between her looking up at him, and the song ending, that Ben is certain he is going to kiss her.

Devi wants to say she stops to think about it, stops to consider the implications of entering into a friendship with her high school boyfriend and the one who got away, (or was she the one who got away?) who she’s not exactly sure she’s over.
There are some very clear lines drawn in this situation, lines that she should respect and stay safely behind, lines she should take to heart.
But that’s the thing about her and Ben. All they do is cross all the lines.

Now that she thinks about it, she remembers the ridiculous amount of times she’d compared her time with Paxton with her time with Ben, even when she first started dating him. Whenever her and Paxton would be doing anything even remotely similar to something she’d done with Ben, her mind would throw past memories at her, hurl them at her as she tried to dodge them feverishly.
She’s spent the past two years trying to push those thoughts to the back of her head, ignoring them and letting them conglomerate until it eats up her entire brain. She knows that eventually, she will have to confront those thoughts, and that time is now. She can’t continue pretending like everything is fine, that her heart doesn’t skip a beat every time Ben smiles at her, that she doesn’t think about him whenever she closes her eyes, that she doesn’t feel a thrill in her body every time he touches her, and that she doesn’t enjoy spending time with him, or bickering with him.

Devi looks back at Keerthi, who mouths do it and makes a shoo motion with her hands.
“Fine,” Devi says, grabbing her jacket and keys. “But if you murder me, I’m going to be sorely disappointed in you.”
“I’m not gonna murder you, David,” he says, following her out. “Though, if you died in my presence, you would die happy.”
