    Summary

In which the Soldier makes a very long journey, the Captain takes on a new role, the Widow pays a visit to an old friend, Iron Man is a hot mess, and the Falcon is very done with everyone.

    __________

It would be so simple to complete the mission.

So simple to acquire acceptable clothing – there were entire supply closets full of the medical uniforms – to cover the prosthesis with sterile gloves, blend in with the hospital personnel, wait until the change of guard to enter the Captain’s room. To slit his throat, press the hands over his mouth until his breath ran out, tamper with the intravenous medications, or introduce air into the veins. It had done these things many times before. Deaths in medical centers were easily disguised, and he had been so weak, so heavily damaged when it…

It pulled him from the river. Why had it pulled him from the river?

    Summary

The asset is programmed not to strike a handler. Not to struggle no matter who is doing what to it. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to shy away when technicians approach torch-first to take it apart and put it back together in the name of science, research, progress. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to object to the mouth guard, the restraints, the chair. Not to beg or plead when it is left empty and hungry in its cryo tube. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to so much as consider harming an operator, the highest of all members of the organization. And...

And if the silent, liquid fury in the asset’s eyes is any indicator, the asset does not comply.

(Or: The one where the asset is thawed out during the Chitauri attack on New York, escapes, and goes hunting for revenge with the Avengers hot on the trail.)

This is the journey of the Winter Soldier through Brock Rumlow's eyes. A What If in its own, this series asks (and hopefully answers) the questions of what if Brock Rumlow and Jack Rollins were the Winter Soldier's handlers... and what if they weren't as bad as we all thought?

    Summary

He always trusted Bucky. Steve believed that Bucky would remember him someday, and he was prepared to wait as long as it takes.

    That day had arrived.

It felt like a dream. He opened his apartment door and saw Bucky standing there.

His voice caught in his throat, tears threatening to spill over.

“Bucky. You remembered me.” That was his first thought. It was the only possibility. He almost cried saying it.

    “Yes, sir.”

    Summary

After Project Insight, the Soldier is left without a handler, so it returns to the only one it knows is alive -- the former target, the Captain, the man it remembers kneeling for. At first he seems unfit for the job. His protocol is strange, and he does not want to use it like the other handlers did. But as the Soldier comes to know him, it begins to think he might be the best handler it has ever had.

    ___

A long story of recovery that attempts to wrestle with identity, personhood, agency, unconventional relationships, and weird consent. This verse assumes previous HTP and deals with rape recovery in a way that your therapist probably wouldn't approve of.
