And life smiles at her misery like the little shit it is.

“Alright,” Kana said, dabbing at her mouth with a napkin as her lips pressed down into a deep frown. She didn’t look impressed at all. “When you say date, what do you mean by that?” She repeated her question more slowly this time. She set her chopsticks down before crossing her arms across her chest. Guarded.
“I —,” He was at a loss for words, “I’m asking you to be my girlfriend.”
Kana squinted at him.
“—And what do you mean by that?”
He looked around the room momentarily, wondering if he was being set up. Maybe Ruby had caught wind of his plans and had informed Kana of them before roping her into some sort of strange prank. Still, he couldn’t imagine Kana going along with something like that, even if she did tend to humor Ruby much more since they had made up.
“Are you serious?” Aqua asked brow furled. He wasn’t sure just how he could explain this more clearly.
“Like a heart attack,” Kana responded with a huff, folding her arms across her chest.

Akane took a deep breath, let it out so slowly that it didn’t even disturb the long strands of hair that had crept their way onto her nose, and spoke. “And if I asked you to take responsibility for it, what would you do?”

There are a lot of meanings for the word ‘like’. Kanoko likes the cat, and she likes when it rains, and she ‘likes’ the old woman’s dumplings. So just because the detective says he ‘likes’ her, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he meant it like that, right?
Or, Kanoko slowly learns how to be accepted and loved, and everyone is soft.
