Rumors. Like when the one peak lord decided not to ascend and a tsunami took out a third of the coast and tainted all the rivers for Li onward. Or when one went missing and a four year drought occurred. Or when one was killed on a last minute mission and a plague took out a quarter of the population. Or when the last Bai Zhan lord was executed and the demon emperor invaded. Or, in what might have been in another universe, all lords were killed except the locked away and forgotten artifact peak, who finally ascended just in time for the heavens to collapse into the already united mortal realm, reducing all to chaotic primordial sludge. Yeah. Rumors. Luckily as long as the lord was replaced quickly enough that someone ascended under the name with the rest everything was fine.
