“Let’s find somewhere private. Follow me.” Shelby fell into her bat form—shadowy simulacrum fluttering where she once stood—and rose out of the castle’s foyer into open air.
Avid hurried to join her, skipping a couple enthusiastic steps forward before he managed to transform himself.
Shelby’s hollow tree trunk wasn’t as secret as she’d thought and if no one else had told Avid about the castle’s secret tunnel, she wasn’t going to be the one to reveal it. She darted higher in the sky as she deliberated, Avid giggling behind her, and she spotted a cliff at the edge of the pale woods. Good enough.
