Ellie lunges forward, pressing her palm against his mouth. “Shut up,” she seethes. “If she wakes up now -”
It’s only when he licks her palm and Ellie lets out a disgusted, “Ugh!” that Sally stirs with a whine.
“Sorry, sorry,” Jesse apologizes, pressing several light kisses to her forehead. “Go back to sleep,” he says into her hair. She whines again, and he's forced to up the ante. “When you wake up, I’ll be here and we’ll go get you a puppy, okay?”
She takes a deep, shaky breath and settles back down against him, moving her head so her nose is in his armpit. “Misser Eugene’s puppies…” she mumbles and then she’s out.
When he looks back up, Ellie’s grin takes up her whole face. “You’re such a sucker.”

Now that Ellie’s alone, she just sits on her bed and looks at her book. She can’t call it reading anymore – by now she has read the thing front to back so many times that she could quote some paragraphs word for word.
That’s why it’s weird that it took her so long to notice the message written on the front page.
There, nestled just below the title, there’s one line of writing addressed to her. It doesn’t mention any names, but it is for her. It can’t be otherwise.
It’s not Tommy’s handwriting, nor Maria's, nor Riley's.But it’s somebody’s. Somebody who knew she’d like to read about Moon landing, spaceships, and astronauts. Somebody who cared enough to take this book, fix the hardcover with some scotch tape, and give it to her. Somebody who wrote those words on the front page knowing that they would make her smile.
Somebody who loved her.
It’s late spring 2024 when Ellie wakes up in Jackson. She has a backpack full of books, a burn on her arm, and no memory of how she went from Boston QZ to Wyoming.

Summary
“Ell-” He starts, his greeting cutting off when Ellie doesn’t seem to register the movement of the door fast enough to stop trying to pound on it, the momentum sending her forward into him and knocking them both to the floor in his effort to keep her from getting hurt.
“Hey, hey,” he says. “What’s going on, sweetheart? What’s happening?”
Ellie’s head lolls on her neck in a way that has his heart pounding, and finally she manages to roll it enough to look at him. The sight of tear tracks down her cheeks ratchets his terror up several degrees higher, especially with how unfocused her eyes seem.
“Hey,” he says, patting her cheek gently. “Talk to me, kiddo. What’s going on?”
“I’m dying,” she says, voice trembling, and his heart stops completely. “I can’t make the world stay still, and I’m gonna die.”
“...what?”

Summary
Feeling guilty about leaving Joel to play single parent yet again, she rises and follows, finding Joel on Ellie’s bed with her all but on his lap, face tucked against his neck. His chin is resting against her head, and as she watches from the place in the doorway, he tucks his chin enough to kiss her hair.
“Easy, baby girl,” he says, a low, soothing croon. “You’re okay, baby. I’ve gotcha.”
Ellie’s response is too low for her to hear, and based on the way Joel’s expression doesn’t change, she’s not sure it’s clear enough to actually be intelligible.
“Shh,” he hushes. “I’m here, baby girl. I’m here.”
After a few more minutes of watching Joel handle parenting with ease like he didn’t have a twenty year hiatus between children, Tess decides to lay back down.
It seems like he’s got it under control, after all.

With a heavy sigh, Ellie turns back and faces him. “Riley…she wasn’t exactly known for turning the other cheek.”
“You saying you’ve got a long list of potential suspects?”
She pulls her coat tighter around her middle, arms wrapped in a vice around herself in some useless attempt of defense, preservation. “She liked to protect me.”
Joel tries not to think too long and hard on why there was a time when this young woman was a stubby little teenager in need of so much protection. “You think she protected you from the wrong sort of person?”
Ellie’s tongue darts out to lick along her chapped, blue-tinged lips. She’s freezing. “I think maybe she tried to.”
