With a frustrated sigh, he turned and walked toward the door to follow Damian. His footsteps echoed through the now-empty hallways, the cold air outside almost a relief compared to the tension he'd left behind.
He reached the car, unlocking it with a quick motion, and they both got into their seats silently. Tim desperately wanted to ask Damian what the hell that was about, why he didn’t just punch that kid in the face and leave.
But he held off.

"I need to thank you," Damian said. He didn't quite know why he was doing it then. But the night had a wistful effect on people. It made them melancholic. And, sometimes, afraid.
"Thank me for what?"
"For loving me." It was something he'd always been grateful to Richard for. "You loved me even when I was a monster."
Dick didn't know it then, but he had kept a promise he didn't even remember making.
Sacrifice was divine.
"Being a hero requires sacrifice, Damian. That's what being a hero is about. It's about sacrificing yourself and desires for things that are more important."
Damian had nodded, but he had spent the rest of the night wondering what he would have to do to become important. What he would have to do to be worth sacrificing something over.
