Insanity was not the only side effect of the memory chip, though Simon doesn't entirely discount that that's what this is. He keeps it secret, either way. Empathy or insanity, neither are weaknesses he's sure he can afford. It helps keep him alive, either way, and perhaps at some point he'll last long enough for it not to be a weakness at all.
