At their night class on cooking he day dreams about bite marks he doesn’t remember receiving, and it’s only Armand’s jab to his ribs that keeps him from letting his casserole burn. As they press their way into a packed club, slipping between sweaty, humid bodies, Daniel fantasizes about an orgasm he’s unaware of, wrung from his sleeping body.

Armand had felt it instantly — the spike of panic, followed by the creeping weight of nihilistic dread. He feels it everywhere nowadays. The 1980s are a decade of scared young things, terrified the comfort they seek will kill them, of fear and dread and paranoia. It reminds him of Venice, and the crawling rot of plague, the suspicious glances between neighbours as they'd snapped their shutters closed.
