"You said the other day that you like me.”
Ronan turns those nearly colorless eyes on Adam. “You said that.”
“You didn’t deny it.”
Ronan looks away.
“I wasn’t sure." Those texts he’d sent out, unanswered for days, burned him worse than he could have prepared for.
“Need to record your hypothesis and observations before you come to a conclusion, Parrish?” It sounds hurt. Ronan takes a breath. “You could, you know. Explore this, or what the fuck ever, if you need to do it, to know. You could do…anything you want to me.”
Ronan’s skin turns ruddy, first right above his collarbone, then his neck.
Out of control, Adam steps forward. “It would be…awkward in school if something happened between us.”
“Who the fuck would I tell?” It’s hypothetical, and the longer Adam watches him, the more defenseless Ronan looks, the more uncertain.
“Can I?” It's a question that means more to Adam than Ronan could possibly know. Adam Parrish never asked for anything in his life. He’d learned that very early on. Only now, was it something he was actively practicing.
Ronan’s breath comes harsh through his nose. He jerks his head once.
Adam kisses him.

Reaching up, Adam took off his sunglasses so he could fully meet his husband’s gaze. Gansey didn’t grip his racket so hard his knuckles turned white. His mouth wasn’t turned down in disdain, and his hazel eyes weren’t narrowed in anger. They did, however, have a darkness to them they shouldn’t have in the six o’clock sunlight of late summer. A darkness and a glint, one that told Adam the way Ronan had stared at him had struck a match inside Gansey.
And that was a fire Gansey could work with. A fire Gansey could use.
A fire that hadn’t burned inside him for a very, very long time.
Because in the match for Adam Parrish’s affection, for his love, Richard Campbell Gansey III had won after so many hard-fought, jealousy-laden sets, and Adam didn’t regret his choices. His sacrifices. He’d worked hard so they could have the life they wanted, a life Adam never could have had with Ronan. In that match for Adam, Ronan Lynch had come out ahead early, won the first few games, but in the end, he’d squandered his lead, and Adam had always wanted more than someone without ambition. Someone who never strove to be better, to be more.
