Summary
The life of a temple slave is short, unpleasant, and generally ends in sacrifice.
Unlike other, newer, cities (with their orderly new religions, and temples on nice well-lit mountains) the ancient city of Gotham likes her old gods blood-soaked, with their cave-like temples dark and cold, nestled deep in her breast.
The old gods are vengeful untame things, primeval horrors, prowling the night keeping the citizens in line. The God of the Long Night rules the city with an iron fist, his priests delivering vengeance onto wrongdoers. Gotham doesn't have nice gods. She has Gods for much darker things.

The bass dropped for the fifteenth time in the past hour and Jason’s eye twitched. Nothing like a club to make you wish you were dead – again. But his contact basically lived in the Penguin Club (ironically not affiliated with the supervillain), so here he was. Suffering in a club on a Friday night when he could have been at home, rereading Pride and Prejudice.
He took a sip of his drink, wishing the Lazarus Pit hadn’t cranked his metabolism into high gear so he could actually feel the whiskey for longer than 5 minutes – when he saw Tim across the dance floor and nearly spit out his drink. As if Tim wasn't distracting enough on a normal day, he was wearing Doc Martens, a band tee, and a nose ring???
Unfortunately, his contact noticed, and Jason's "thought I saw my ex" excuse backfired when his contact went over and started... talking to Tim?? As soon as Tim locked eyes with Jason, he knew - he was so fucked.

Jason showed up to the briefing mostly out of curiosity - and when Bruce explained that Tim had gotten more actionable death threats than usual in the lead up to a fancy conference, it didn't take a genius to figure out why he was there. Tim needed a bodyguard, and since all the other Bats were Tim’s known associates…
Six pairs of eyes turned to Jason when Bruce got to that portion of the briefing, and Dick was grinning so wide that Jason felt his right eye twitch. Tim looked completely unfazed, but something about seeing the threats in black and white made Jason uneasy. He knew Tim could handle himself – but the thought of him alone, without his bo staff or even a batarang, set Jason’s teeth on edge.
So. It was easier to say yes than to examine why. But he still wasn't going to call Tim sir.
