Summary
Loss can take many shapes. For Hans Capon, it is the freedom he lost to an arranged marriage, a simple happiness of living in the moment lost to his new duties. More recently, it is the temper he lost in a single training session, followed by a lost fight with his pride. Then there is a certain blacksmith-shaped hole in his heart — and, most lately, a lost struggle with water, which seems to have cost him dearly, followed by a lost hope. Can any of it be recovered, or is it gone forever?

MULTI CHAPTER FIC
Henry escaped Skalitz when his parents were killed during the raid. Only Martin didn't tell him to go to Radzig. Instead, he told him to get to Kuttenburg and the forge he apprenticed at. He told Henry that Shkoda and Magdalena would keep him safe from war. It was his last attempt to keep him from a life of warring and fighting even when it came knocking at their door. Taking the sword that they had forged for Radzig with him, he fled after they were cut down in front of him. He doesn't know that Radzig is his father. He doesn't go to Rattay. He doesn't meet Sir Hans Capon... but one night, when Henry finds a thief in his forge, he assumes that dealing with him will be straightforward.
It turns out to be anything but. And meetings don't happen the way they might have, had he been told the truth on the day that Skalitz burned.

Summary
After a poison steal Hans of his memories of the previous years, he wakes with a wife he doesn't remember marrying and a toddler he doesn't know.
There is also something he cannot figure out about his bodyguard.
Hans first noticed the man during his recovery, a strong figure who never seemed to leave his side. He carried himself like a soldier, though his posture was looser than the guards at the gate, and his tongue far less disciplined. He spoke to Hans with a boldness that bordered on insolence, his words more fitting for a comrade than for a servant.
In time, sharp words and the reminder of position were enough to put him in his place, and his boldness was curbed. Still, the unease lingered. Hans could not recall ever appointing Henry, nor why the man seemed to look at him as though mourning something that was not spoken of.

Summary
Henry should be the one standing here, triumphant in his long-await victory and finally laying to rest the spirits of Skalitz he carries on his shoulders, but Henry is God-knows-where, trapped in von Bergow’s hands, and so Hans will do it in his stead.
