“I want to stay,” she says, trying to explain better, even though Joyce hasn’t understood once why she doesn’t want to leave Hawkins. “It’s okay that you want to leave. I understand. But I don’t. And I get to make choices.”

Steve’s a freshman, a benchwarmer, new blood, and he’s drawn the short straw. David Liefeld, Captain and star Center of the Hawkins Tigers, pulled him aside, rough, warm hand on his shoulder, and said, “Hey, get us some good shit for the party on Friday, alright?”
Steve hadn’t told Tommy about it, even if Tommy would probably have a better idea for getting drugs than this. Steve’s fucking committed, though. He doesn’t want to be the freshie that goes crying to his friend like some kind of queer.
This is why Steve is standing in the middle of the fucking forest in front of a dilapidated picnic table instead of hanging out at the quarry like everyone else. This is why Steve is waiting for the Freak to arrive - the only dealer he knows about for sure, who comes to this table at this time and sells to anyone who wants to buy.

Summary
The people of Hawkins were still alive, folding donated t-shirts into neat piles in the middle school gym, and passing out boxes of canned food to families in need, and smiling to each other as they said, hanging in there? Good, me too!
But then the ground fell and the fires started.
And then the Hawkins citizenry abandoned ship like they were time travelers aboard the goddamn Titanic.
And then the Hellfire Club and associated extended party members commandeered Loch Nora and turned it into a safe zone for the miniscule remaining population of Hawkins.
And then the dead people started showing back up.
Or: Eddie’s in love with Steve, but it doesn’t really matter because the world ended a few months ago and he’s been living on borrowed time ever since. Steve’s in love with Eddie, but he’s been through this before with a wild-eyed, steady-handed survivor who was better off without him, and doing it again might be enough to kill him this time.
Or or: The Party are vampire hunters in post-apocalyptic Hawkins, in a world where soulmates can't harm each other.

Behind him came a sharp clatter. The Leader’s pole had slipped, rattling against the deck. For the first time Park had ever seen, the man dropped to his knees, groping after it—movements jagged.
The Recruiter let out a bark of laughter.
“So it is true! Jesus, Boss, you freak. And here I thought the driver was pulling my leg.”
