Summary
With legal troubles looming on the horizon and reports of her…experiments failing, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is definitely having a very bad day.
It doesn’t get better when her (probably crazy) shadow-ops agent Yelena Belova signs up for the top-secret Sentry Project with absolutely no idea what she’s getting into.
But it’s okay. No one’s survived it before. To Val, it’s a quick way to get rid of a wild card that refuses to listen to directions.
But obviously, knowing her luck, it wouldn’t be that easy.
(What if…Yelena Belova became the Sentry instead of Bob Reynolds?)

Long ago, they met as kids.

“Hello! Are you new here?”
It’s a girl, Yelena notices. She looks five, like her. She has her shiny dark hair in a ponytail and big blue eyes. At first, Yelena does what’s natural to her and avoids eye contact, but she eventually remembers that her parents say it’s rude and looks into her eyes. They’re very blue. Like the ocean. Somehow, it’s not quite as weird to make eye contact with her.
Yelena knows she isn’t supposed to talk to strangers, so she lets the other girl know, in case she didn’t hear that rule before. “You aren’t supposed to talk to people you don’t know.”
“I know. My Mommy tells me that.” The other girl tilts her head. “But you know what, what if we tell each other our names? Then we won’t be strangers anymore.”
That sounds like airtight logic to her. “Okay,” she replies slowly.
The girl holds out her hand.
“I’m Kate. Kate Bishop. What’s your name?”

She leans in closer, the low light glinting off her blonde hair, bringing out the dark roots. Her green eyes shine in the darkness.
She looks so familiar, if only he could remember her.
“So your name is Bob Reynolds, yes?”
Her accent is both foreign and comforting. “And your name is Yelena Belova.”
“Yes.” She tilts her head. “You know, it feels like I know you from somewhere.”
“Same.”
“Almost like we were meant to meet, as sappy as that sounds.”
He smiles softly. “I don’t think it’s that sappy.”
Her forest eyes burn into his own.
“Almost like fate. Bob Reynolds, do you believe in fate?”
He gently brushes a lock of blonde hair out her face. “Maybe tonight is the night I’ll start.”
