Ilya grins, he sees like Anya after doing a trick right and we praise her. “For you. For us.”
He nods for me to open it.
Shane opens it cautiously. Inside is a whiteboard calendar — large, clean, magnetic — along with a pack of multicolored markers.
“I thought,” Ilya says, suddenly a little less confident, “maybe big version of your planner. For wall. So you don’t have to hold everything in head.”
Shane stares at it.
Then his throat tightens.

Ilya has never had a soulmark.
It’s ok. It’s fine. His mother didn’t want him enough to stay and his father, even when he doesn’t do anything but forget these days, only remembers how much he doesn’t want him while still alive, and so why would he expect the universe to give him any sign that he could be wanted?
So when…
Oh lord give him strength, when he finds a large spot right below his left buttcheek that he can SWEAR looks just a shade different from the rest of his skin with very clear outlines for where it starts and ends, his first thought is skin cancer and his second thought in quick succession is denial.
Or how Ilya thinks he has no chance of having shane as a soulmate until he does, and then he convinced himself that that doesn’t mean shane has HIM as a soulmate, (he does), and Shane fixes it.

His eyes lock in on Shane in the centre of the room, face still beautiful despite all the bruising that paints the underneath of his eyes and those perfect freckles. His arm is in a sling and one half of his chest beneath the hospital gown seems to be bandaged- Ilya imagines it could've been worse. But he doesn't really want to imagine it.
Shane is grinning at him dopily. Ilya traces his eyes to the bag of fluids being pumped into his... friend. Yeah, painkillers, that checks out. Ilya's kneejerk response is to smile right back, which is probably stupid, but his heart is still pumping like he's run a marathon. So.
The second thing he notices as he basically crashes into the room, is that they are very much not alone.
A pretty woman, Yuna Hollander, if he had to guess- sits at Shane's bedside, staring at Ilya like she's not quite sure he isn't some strange hallucination. Like maybe her son isn't the only one with a head injury right now.
"Hello..? Can I help you, Rozanov?"
