Summary
When 17-year-old James’ life begins to fall apart after his father dies and The Dead Poets Society falls apart, he begins to pray that someone saves him from his self-imposed hell.
Unfortunately, it seems that it’s been decided that 18-year-old infuriatingly smug (and objectively handsome, it’s not gay to point that out) Gregory House is the man for the job.
As the two’s oddly complicated relationship blossoms over their love for pranks, scraping gum off of desks, and The Rolling Stones, James has to wonder if Todd was actually just projecting when he said there was something different about him, or if it was true.
“Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.”— W.H Auden.

“..Sorry I’m late,”
“You don’t sound very apologetic.”
“Hard to be, when this is the umpteenth time we’ve had this conversation.”
“Man, you must be bored with me then.”
“..I could never be.. with.. the real you.”
“Well, I’m the next best thing, aren’t I? Since the.. real me is dead and buried and all.”
Or
Lisa Cuddy dreams about Amber Volakis— the girl she let get away.

Summary
Stacy knows she’ll leave Cuddy’s house with a new job, bite marks on her thighs, and a rock of guilt in her stomach. She knows she’ll run her fingers over the indentations on her thigh for days, reminding herself of what she forced herself to give up. The only Dostoyevsky she knows reads itself over and over again in her mind: “Your worst sin is you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing.”

Summary
Greg is twenty-three and James is nineteen when they first meet as counsellors at a sleepaway camp in the Adirondacks.
- -
James watches the change in Greg’s body: the tan lines between his collarbone and the edge of his shoulder, the way his hair lightens golden brown in the summer sun, how it curls lower on his forehead as it grows out, the freckles on his back.
Greg watches the way James runs his hands through his hair absentmindedly when the younger female staff members flirt with him, the way his cheeks flush, his lips pout, and how his eyes always seem to find Greg’s in those moments. They’re never far apart.
