Summary
After Osgood's family and fiancé Josh are killed by a brutal epidemic of smallpox, it seems as though all of her life prospects have vanished - until she receives an offer of employment to work as a lady's maid for the mysterious Viscountess Kate Stewart.
There's a couple of things about Lady Kate that don't add up for Osgood, but the opportunity to leave her tiny, suffocating village and have some kind of future is too great for her to pay any mind to a few inconsistent details - and she doesn't really have much choice in the matter. Whatever happens, she gambles that it will be better than her previous miserable existence in the village...
