Heat spread across Ilya's face. His mouth fell open slightly. He let out a short, stuttered laugh of disbelief. This couldn't- he was straight, he wasn't-
“Finally got you at your own game.” Shane's smirk widened to a smile, his hand clapping down on Ilya's shoulder to squeeze it slightly. For once in his life, Ilya was unable to find his voice.
“Damn.” Shane laughed, jostling him a bit. “If I had known this was all it took to get you to shut the fuck up, I would have started flirting back years ago.”

When old college friends Ilya and Shane show up to their mutual best friend's wedding, they are ready to fulfill their duties as bridesmen. Even after years of not seeing each other, they fall right back into their usual banter.
Ilya loves to flirt with Shane. Shane loves to tell him to fuck off. It's a running bit. Nothing more than a joke between two friends; because Shane is gay and Ilya is straight and it doesn't actually mean anything…until Shane finally decides to flirt back, and Ilya's world suddenly tilts on its axis.

The best time to do it, really, would be just before Rozanov headed back to Moscow. His American friends would think he’d headed home early, and his family in the old country would believe he had stayed in the states longer. The confusion would delay the manhunt a precious few days, enough for Shane to be sure he was well away from the fallout.
So that’s when he would do it, he decided. He would kill Rozanov after one of them won Rookie of the Year.

Summary
For the most part, Ilya didn’t do cute nicknames for his contacts – he found it tended to confuse him, when someone called. So most people were just their names or their relationships to him – Misha Agent and Carlos Physio. Papa for his father and Dickhead Brother for Alexei and Sveta for Svetlana. Simple. Ilya liked it simple.
It hadn’t really mattered, he thought, until Cliff Marleau had mentioned it as they prepared to board a plane home from Montreal.
“Dude,” Marly said. “You’ve been texting this chick for fucking years and she’s just Jane in your phone? Kind of cold.”

Except Shane accidentally, drunkenly, outs himself to the Montreal Metros at the end of the season. Who are not as okay with it as Shane would have hoped.
