“Listen, Jason,” Tim says frankly down the line, and Jason tenses at the use of his real name. That doesn’t happen. Not casually, at least. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to die, so I need you to stay on the line with me.”
Jason short-circuits for a beat, and then runs the words back. “What?”
Tim takes a deep breath, and it’s steady. “I’m going to die,” he repeats, “and I don’t want to be alone, so please stay on the line.”

Tim is five years old when he drowns in his parents' pool. He dies quietly, waiting for parents who love him, but will never be there, to realise that something is wrong. They never show up, and he sinks into oblivion.
When he wakes up and claws his way out of the water, the sun has set, and the lights of his house are on. He is cold and wet and his lungs burn.
But most of all, Tim is alone.

In which Prudence Wood's transition from League Assassin to vigilante-adjacent operative goes about as smoothly as anyone could expect and Tim displays a deep dedication to puns, pop culture references, and rampant paranoia.
Granted, the paranoia turns out to be entirely justified.
Or: Pru travels the world, Tim schemes, and more than one alliance is tested.

Another absolute banger of a fic by this author. Fantastic slow burn friendship, genuinely clever twists, and full, rich characters. The research and immersion in the world is next level, and it manages to juggle an entire host of full, complex relationships and emotional events deftly, made all the more impressive from the outsider narrator's point of view.
