Even though there was a poetry to the canon ending for Red Feather and Abish, I couldn't help but imagine how their story would have evolved if they lived. In this story, the Shoshone emerge victorious, and both Red Feather and Abish survive. Left to grapple with the aftermath of war, Abish finds herself torn between the world she once knew and the one that is slowly becoming her home.

The expectations had been branded into her skin until they welted up red. They had been carved deep into her bones, poisoning the marrow and hollowing her out. It reminds her of the icy stare he gives enemies in battle—the one that makes them more likely to lay down their weapons than have to face him in a fight. He’s never aimed that sort of look at her before, though.
A shiver slithers down her spine, her brain processing the predatory glint in his expression and telling her that she’s prey.
But this is Kakashi. She has nothing to be scared of.
