Edward doesn’t remember when they exchanged numbers. After the second time, he thinks, or maybe the third. It’s always a bit of a blur if he’s being honest, their time spent in liminal spaces that all feel the same even when they’re multiple states away from each other: motel rooms that feel like they’ve been transported to the 70s, or crammed together in the cab of one of their trucks, or once pressed together in a single stall shower at a truck stop, skin slick with water and sweat and ivory bar soap.
What he does know is that when Sol texts, he answers.

In a lifetime of unsubtleties, the affair with Crozier is James’s worst. Crozier’s hand resting on James’s lower back, there for all to see. Crozier’s fingers nudging gently at James’s shirtcuffs when they stood around at receptions; Crozier’s pale eyes going soft and foolish when James entered the room. Sometimes simply Crozier’s nod, sharp and proprietary, as though to say get upstairs, get in my office, close the door—as if the rest of them were not right there.

Sol looks steadily at Edward as the voice on the other end talks. In the stifling quiet of the shop, Edward swears he can make out the pea-gravel texture of Blanky’s voice on the other end.
“Yeah, your one o’clock is here,” Sol nods. Then he winks! Edward feels himself wince. He’s somehow made it to thirty-nine years of age without being able to distinguish between when he’s being flirted with and when he’s being mocked, and this is a situation where he’s absolutely cursing himself for not knowing the difference.
“Yeah, man, of course. Glad to do it. You want me to just close up after, or… yeah, no. Almost nobody. Ok. See you tomorrow.”
He hangs up, grinning.
“So, the bad news is that Blanky got into a car accident. Just a fender-bender, I guess. Good news is, I get to do you.”

He’s not sure what for exactly, but it must be something terribly wicked or unforgivably ordinary or maybe this is just who he is: John Irving, a man destined to get trapped in the sweater of life only to emerge wearing it backwards.
He looks up into Tommy’s big pretty eyes that stare back at him as though he’s just told him he’d like to give it all up for a serious shot at a career as a mime. “What do I do?”
Tommy’s expression shifts into a mean edged sort of pity. He shrugs. “Pray?”
