    Summary

A cancer diagnosis forces Shane and Ilya to stop pretending they have time. They don’t slowly fall into each other—they crash into it, trying to make up for seven years of almosts and what-ifs. But illness doesn’t magically fix who they are. The same walls, fears, and habits that kept them apart are still there—only now they have to face them while fighting something much bigger than themselves.

    Shane: Mom.

Shane: Are you aware that dad has unfettered internet access and is posting how to videos on YouTube calling himself Daddy David?

Mom: Honey, it's fine. It's not that big of a deal.

Shane: That might be the most insane thing you've ever said.

Shane: And I have heard you threaten multiple coaches of mine with bodily harm.

    Hi Ilya,

My name is Shane! I don’t speak Russian, I hope that’s okay. I’m also 25 years old and I love hockey too! So we have some things in common.

I’ve never written an inmate before. I don’t really know why I’m doing this. I guess I’m lonely. I’m not very good at making friends or dating. I think maybe I can be a bit awkward in person, but I’m good at writing. So I hope that’s okay.

or Shane Hollander finds Ilya Rozanov on WriteAPrisoner.com and sends him an email.

“Wait, I could totally see that,” Connors says. “She wears reading glasses and he’s, like, obsessed with them. Sometimes on the road, he calls her from the bathroom and I hear him begging her to put them on.”

“The glasses! I heard that too.” Shit, it must be a fetish, right? She doesn’t just happen to be old. Rozy likes that she’s old.

Or: Cliff figures out why Ilya’s keeping his Montreal girl a secret. She’s not a girl at all...she's an elderly woman. Or maybe an elderly man?
